Wax and Wane

I have a new essay published in Taproot magazines latest edition Lunar entitled Wax and Wane. I’ve included an excerpt below. Its an independently published, ad free magazine whose issues I have enjoyed a subscription to for a few years now. Check it out here.

“When I was a little girl, I believed the moon followed me. I’m sure most kids feel that way when they are young, but I had no way of knowing that at the time. On  weekend afternoons, my father would pack his bow, quiver, arrows, an old milk jug filled with ice water or juice, and we would head out to the “bush.” The bush was the overall term we used to describe swathes of undeveloped land around the city of Gaborone where I grew up. Undeveloped, the land was still home to several species of Sparrows which we called Thrushes , Doves,Warthogs, Kudu, Gophers, Porcupines and lots of wild flora like Acacia, Baobab, various Cacti and Moringa.

We only huwhen we needed the meat, but my father spent hours each weekend honing his skills.  He would practice tracking, walking silently, and practicing his aim. He called it his church. It was his way to commune with nature after the monotony if being a pharmacist in a white coat all week long…”
